Every year on September 15th, Costa Rica bursts into color, music, and pride as the country celebrates its Independence Day. A Different Kind of Independence

Unlike many nations that mark their independence with military parades, Costa Rica celebrates with something far more charming: children. This tradition commemorates the Antorcha de la Libertad, the Freedom Torch relayed by runners from Guatemala all the way to Costa Rica, symbolizing how news of independence traveled through Central America in 1821.

At exactly 6:00 PM on September 14th, life pauses across the country. Radios and television stations broadcast the national anthem, and everyone — from schoolchildren to shopkeepers — stops to sing it together, wherever they happen to be.

Raising the Colors Atop the Lighthouse

Here at The Lighthouse Ocotal, we mark the occasion with our own tradition: the ceremonial changing of the flag at the top of the lighthouse. As dawn breaks on September 15th, our team climbs to the lantern room to lower the flag that has watched over Playa Ocotal throughout the year and raise a fresh one in its place, crisp and bright against the Pacific sky. It's a quiet, symbolic moment — the same flag colors that fill the streets below during the school parades are hoisted high above the bay, visible to every boat and every guest along the coastline. For our staff, many of whom have family marching in the local desfiles that same morning, it's a proud way to open Independence Day: a small ceremony with a big view, connecting our lighthouse to the celebrations happening across the whole country.

No Costa Rican celebration is complete without food. Expect the aroma of arroz con pollo, freshly made tamales, and chicheme (a sweet corn drink) drifting through the air. Many local sodas and family kitchens prepare special Independence Day menus, and it's the perfect time for guests to try dishes passed down through generations.
